Inspiring conversation with Alex Ballinger, MP for Halesowen.
On 9th May 2025 we had a conversation with Alex Ballinger, MP for Halesowen, this marked an important moment in EPACUK’s ongoing work to champion African families in the UK. The discussion focused on how national and local decision-makers can better understand the everyday realities faced by parents, from navigating the school system to accessing mental health support and community services.
Shining a light on real challenges
During the meeting, EPACUK shared lived experiences from African families who are working hard to support their children’s education while encountering barriers such as limited culturally aware services, stigma around mental health, and confusing local systems. These conversations highlighted how gaps in information, representation, and support can leave parents feeling isolated and unsure where to turn.
Alex Ballinger MP listened closely to these concerns and reflected on the pressures families across Halesowen face when trying to secure the right help at the right time. The dialogue reinforced the need for more inclusive, accessible services that recognise the specific needs of Black and African communities.
Our mission at EPACUK
At EPACUK, the core mission is to empower parents with the knowledge, confidence, and tools they need to advocate for their children and build thriving families. This includes creating safe spaces for honest conversation, connecting families with practical resources, and working in partnership with schools, health professionals, and local authorities.
Strengthening communities sits at the heart of this work, with a strong focus on ensuring African parents feel seen, heard, and supported in every setting—from the classroom to the clinic. Conversations with policymakers are a vital part of making sure these voices shape the services they rely on.
Building partnerships for impact
The meeting with MP Ballinger is the beginning of a deeper relationship focused on turning listening into action. EPACUK looks forward to exploring ways to collaborate on initiatives that improve access to education, mental health support, and local services for African families in Halesowen and beyond.
EPACUK is grateful to Alex Ballinger for taking the time to engage with parents’ stories and priorities. There is real optimism about what can be achieved when community organisations and political leaders work together to deliver meaningful, long-term change for families.
